C24/Sahara: For Qatar, Autonomy Plan is the Basis of any Realistic Solution to the Dispute

New York (United Nations), 15 June 2022 - Qatar underlined, before the members of the UN Committee of 24 (C24) in New York, that the "constructive" autonomy initiative presented by Morocco is the basis of any realistic solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.

Speaking at the C24 annual meeting, the representative of Qatar expressed his country's support for the UN Secretary-General's efforts to achieve a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution within the framework of the process carried out under the aegis of the United Nations and respect for the national sovereignty of Morocco.

In this regard, he hailed the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Chief for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to relaunch the political process on the Moroccan Sahara, expressing the wish to see a definitive solution to this dispute in the interest of all parties and in favor of strengthening stability and cooperation in the region.

The Qatari diplomat also highlighted Morocco's efforts to promote economic and social development in the Moroccan Sahara.
